A Happy Accident - Knitted Necklace Scarf

Hi All,

Well it seems like ages since I last posted. The kids enjoyed their time off and to be honest so did I. It was lovely to just sit and take a breather. I also have to thank the lovely ladies of the Inspiration Cafe who so very kindly sent me the awesome guest posts that kept you guys entertained while I was away. In fact they surprised me with them, you might remember I was going to bombard you with old guest posts and out of date holiday projects.

Anyway happy accidents, I have had plenty of those, namely the majority of my children, but there have been others as well, like this scarf.

You see I was planning on making this gorgeous cowl from Adele over at Mammy Made for a friend and whenever I am knitting something for someone else I like to give it a go for myself, just to make sure I iron out any issues I might come across. This is a simple stocking stitch but it's done with HUGE needles and it has been so many years since I had used needles of that size that I thought a practice run was necessary  Thank goodness because it turns out that the ball I bought was way too small.

I couldn't get another ball so I cast off and I shoved it in a bag and lazily threw it in with my jewelry making supplies. Then the second week of my holiday I did a massive clean out of my craft room, don't think I wont be showing that off, and light bulb moment the knitted necklace scarf was born.

Wanna make one???

Supplies:

  • 50 gram ball (small ball) of 8 ply wool
  • Size 20 needles
  • Sewing Needle
  • Scarf Bail
  • Bead and jewelry findings

How to make a Knitted Necklace Scarf:

  1. Cast on 20 stitches
  2. Knit in Stocking Stitch until you have just enough to cast off.
  3. Cast Off
  4. Slide the Scarf Bail on
  5. Sew the two ends together
  6. Attach a complementary bead
I shifted the scarf bail around so that it covered up the stitched in ends.

  17. Two thumbs up on this one! My sister, the knitter, pinned it right away and I'm hoping she makes me one. Would it work with string and a summer bauble? I think that would be cool for a summer, style necklace.

  35. I have a question on the needle size - is this 20 mm or US 20? I have some really big needles that are a US 35 and I think that equates to 19 mm. Please let me know as I want mine to turn out as perfect as yours! Many thanks! Naomi

    1. Hi Naomi,

I'm in Australia I forget about the difference in sizes they were 20mm, 19 would be fine :)

Thanks for your lovely comment if you have any questions feel free to ask.

  36. I love your necklace and scarf pattern and have made the scarf many times. Now I would like to make it into a necklace but would like to know how many inches or cm the clasp is?, I am going to order it online but need to know the width if you could please so I don't get it too small. Many thanks!

  37. Hi Again, Sorry to trouble you ..... I also wanted to know can you tell me what store or what online company you ordered your clasp from? Found one online place but not sure if they would be ok or not. Again, many thanks! Naomi

    1. Hi, sorry for the late reply I've been on holidays here is a link to the store I used https://www.etsy.com/au/listing/88866280/2-pcs-40x37x16mm-metal-extra-large-scarf?ref=shop_home_active&ga_search_query=Scarf%2Bbail

It's about 1&1/2 inches long. It's not a clasp it need to be put on befor you sew it up then I just push the bail over to cover the join. If you need any more help email me at mellywoods5@gmail.com

  38. Great post full of useful tips! My site is fairly new and I am also having a hard time getting my readers to leave comments. Analytics shows they are coming to the site but I have a feeling “nobody wants to be first”.Elia & Ponto
